Careers in Publishing: Production & Design
July 13 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Have you ever considered a career in publishing? Do you want to find out more about what working in the industry could look like, with a focus on roles within production and design?
Production and design are all about turning a manuscript on an author’s computer into a real book: a physical and digital product ready and waiting to be found by readers.
Designers define how a book will look, from the first impressions of a book cover to page breaks and illustrations. The production workflow spans copy-editing, typesetting, proofreading, indexing, printing and ebook creation, all the stages required to bring a book to its readers.
In this session you’ll get the chance to hear from production and design professionals, to understand what these roles entail. They’ll discuss their key responsibilities, the skills they think are invaluable to their roles and what they look for in a CV and covering letter from prospective candidates. They will share insight in their own career journeys and how they got to where they are today, and offer advice on how you could build a similar career.
Attendees can expect: candid advice from publishing professionals; the chance to put questions to the panel; and takeaway materials which, we hope, will serve as an inspirational and practical resource when it comes to considering a career in one of the most varied and creative industries within the Arts, whatever your skill-set.
