Submission Guidance
Below you may find all relevant information regarding the submission guidelines and style guides. Each tab contains different information, so please look through any and all tabs if you are unsure about anything. Any questions, please do email us at thehivejournal.mmu@outlook.com.
The Hive Journal has a rolling deadline. However, to ensure that articles are published within the same calendar year, they should be submitted by the end February. Note that articles in The Hive Journal are published as soon as they have been accepted, following the peer-review and revision process. Submission guidance can be found on this page and once you are ready to submit, please send your submission to our email.
The Hive accepts submissions from MMU Post-graduates in the faculty of Arts and Humanities under the following categories:
- Full articles: 7, 000 – 10,000 maximum
- Brief communications: 3,000 – 5,000 maximum
- Reviews: 1,000 – 2,000
Word count is inclusive of references. Submissions containing an element of visual or practice-based material are also welcome.
Articles and brief communications should include a 250-word abstract, and 5 key words. Please also include a short biography (150 words).
Please format your work as follows:
- British English spelling
- Calibri
- Font size 10
- Justified alignment
- No indentation
- Single spaced
- References in the correct format (see Referencing tab)
- Please do not use footnotes or end notes. All relevant text should be included in the main body of the article.
Any articles submitted that do not adhere to the above guidelines will not be rejected but rather will be sent back to the author for re-formatting. Our team cannot provide proofreading services for the article or its referencing, though we will provide feedback and advice on how you may correct formatting errors within.bmissions containing an element of visual or practice-based material are also welcome.
Cite Them Right Harvard
The institutional referencing style has changed to Cite Them Right Harvard and as such, our journal adheres to these guidelines as well.
Cite Them Right (citethemrightonline.com) has a full guide on how to properly reference nearly all sources. There, you’ll find an array of resources, including informative FAQs, supplementary materials, and the Cite Them Right comprehensive guide.

If your submission includes images, tables and other works that are not the intellectual property of the author, full permissions must be obtained prior to publication. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact: thehivejournal.mmu@outlook.com.

Copyright in the work
Please read the following paragraph carefully, as it affects your rights as copyright owner in the work you submit:
Copyright is a form of intellectual property which protects original creative works, including (but not limited to) artwork, written works, music, film and television recordings. Copyright arises automatically when an original work is created in a tangible form. Usually, the author or creator of the work, will be the copyright owner of that work. The policy here at Manchester Metropolitan University is that you as a student will retain ownership of the copyright in any work created by you unless you are subject to alternative requirements under a funding or sponsorship arrangement.
In submitting your work to the Hive Journal, you are acknowledging that your work has not been published anywhere else previously.
To allow publication of your work in the Hive Journal, you agree to grant Manchester Metropolitan University an exclusive and indefinite right to publish your work in the Hive Journal, both online and in hard copy, under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence called the ‘Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International’ (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) licence. What this means in practice, is that you will retain ownership in the copyright in the work, but grant Manchester Metropolitan University the right to first publish the work in the Hive Journal, which will be publicly available online for an indefinite period. By publishing the work under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0), readers of the Hive Journal will be allowed to share your work without obtaining permission from you or us, but will not be able to adapt the work in any way or use it for commercial purposes. They must also credit you as author of the work.
If you want to publish the work in the future, you must ensure you have the permission of Manchester Metropolitan University, which can be obtained by contacting the editorial team at thehivejournal.mmu@outlook.com. You must also acknowledge the Hive Journal as the journal of first publication in any future publications.
In submitting your work to the Hive Journal, you are agreeing to grant Manchester Metropolitan University the right to publish your work in the Hive Journal, as set out in this paragraph.
If you are submitting a research piece, and your research is subject to a funding arrangement, it is very important that you check the terms of your funding arrangement to ensure there are no restrictions on where you can publish your research. If you have any concerns about this at all please contact the editorial team at thehivejournal.mmu@outlook.com before submitting your work.
Third Party Copyright
If you are using extracts of works created by a third party in your work e.g. extracts from someone else’s written work, or an image of someone else’s artwork, please ensure you have checked the copyright requirements in relation to that work and clearly acknowledged the third party as owner of that extract/image.
