International Film première– The Last Shoemakers of Doon Valley

March 7 @ 4:00 pm 7:00 pm

As part of Go Global Week 2025 in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities we will be showcasing a second film premiere by current PhD student Lokesh Ghai and his friend and collaborating filmmaker Jaymin Modi.

This film is a celebration of the resilient community of shoemakers of the Doon Valley in northern India. Shoemaking involves understanding the anatomy of the foot and translating creative ideas of footwear design with attention to comfort, the nature of materials, and the needs of daily life and work. While exploring people’s love for hand-crafted shoes, the film raises the question: for how long will these shoemakers be able to continue their craft against the odds of mass production, fast fashion, caste discrimination and recent leather politics in India

This film screening will be of interest to a range of students and connects themes that include: Social history, capitalism and urbanisation, heritage, small-scale artisans’ business, marginalisation, human rights, foot anatomy, post-colonial studies, and slow and fast fashion.

Following the premiere screening there will be a Q&A with a Guest Speaker and Director Lokesh Ghai.
