Seminar 6.8: Manchester’s queer sonics

August 28 @ 1:00 pm 2:00 pm

When and where: Thursday 28th August 2025 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams, with optional extension until 2.30pm for in-person attendees. Tea, coffee, juice and snacks provided.

Presenter: Markus Hetheier. Markus is a 5th year part-time practice-based PhD candidate at the School of Digital Arts (SODA). His artistic research project involves queer sonic mappings of Manchester (co-)produced by ten research participants and him. The project focuses on queer sonics as a transformative tool for community building.

Format/topic: Markus will begin the session by a brief introduction of his PhD project, focusing on the intersection of methodological and theoretical concepts with practice as research as overall approach. He will then present and discuss the research participants’ individual queer sonic mappings of Manchester and the themes which have emerged from the practice. The session will be concluded with an open discussion and Q&A.

Preparation: If you want to familiarise yourself with queer sonics, you are welcome to read Truman, S. E. and Shannon, D. B. (2018) ‘Queer sonic cultures: an affective walking-composing project’, Capacious: journal for emerging affect inquiry, 3(1), pp. 58—77.

For the discussion and Q&A you may want to think about the following questions: How do we define co-production in artistic research projects? Which role does the researcher have when they are also an artist, facilitator and curator in the project? What influence

Email Loretta to say whether you would like to attend online or in person, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).
