SUMMARY:Writers’ Retreat with Chad McDonald
DESCRIPTION:In-person only in GE 2.06. \n\n\n\nWriters’ Retreats give PhD students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities the opportunity to devote a whole day to writing in a quiet\, structured\, and supportive atmosphere. The retreats are facilitated by Dr Chad McDonald\, the faculty’s Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutor. You will need to arrive ‘ready to write’ but may\, of course\, bring any materials (laptops\, books\, data\, etc.) with you for the whole-day session. There will be some short discussion around good writing practice and how to approach your writing as a professional task\, but much of the day will be devoted to writing without distraction. Whatever your writing project (e.g.\, annual report\, paper\, thesis)\, the retreat will provide a space away from your office or home in which to concentrate and reflect on the process of writing. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Amelia Edwards’s Ghost Stories and Dark Tourism with Emma Liggins
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of the lesser-known but fascinating nineteenth-century author Amelia Edwards. \n\n\n\nAmelia Edwards was a popular and unconventional British writer of ghost stories\, murder mysteries and novels in the mid-Victorian period. She was also iconic for her celebrated work in Ancient Egypt\, becoming one of the first female Egyptologists and founding the Egyptian Exploration Fund (Society). Both her stories and her travel writing are significant for their evocative descriptions of haunted places\, particularly Italy and Egypt\, and their uses of the tropes of dark tourism. \n\n\n\nThis talk compares representations of place\, space\, death and travel in ghost stories such as ‘The Four-Fifteen Express’\, ‘The Engineer’ and ‘The Story of Salome’ and the murder mystery ‘The Tragedy in the Palazzo Bardello’\, set in Rome. I’ll also talk about Victorian dark tourism and Edwards’ visiting of ancient tombs in her intrepid journey down the Nile. The late nineteenth century saw the popularity of Egyptian Gothic marketed to British audiences (Borwein\, 2021; Sullivan\, 2025). Debates within death studies about dark tourism’s connections with ritual\, ambiguity and darkness (Toussaint and Decrop\, 2013; Darvay\, 2016;Stone\, 2006; Seaton\, 2002) can be linked to her attempt to reimagine lost cities of the dead. As in the place writing of Edwards’ contemporary Vernon Lee\, which lingers on the half-erased memorials on Italian tombs and churches\, forgotten stories of violent and/or oppressed women can be activated and excavated by the tourist gaze. The dark tourist may be both horrified and thrilled by their encounter with the past. \n\n\n\nDr Emma Liggins is Reader in English and Co-Director of the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her publications include The British Short Story (with Andrew Maunder &Ruth Robbins) (Palgrave\, 2011) and The Haunted House in Women’s Ghost Stories\, 1850-1945: Gender\, Space and Modernity (Palgrave\, 2020). She has edited a special issue of VPR on the Strand Magazine (2021) and has chapters in The Edinburgh Companion to the Victorian Ghost Story (2025) and Ghosts and the Gothic (2025). She is currently working on a monograph Victorian and Edwardian Death Spaces: Gender and Memorialisation for Manchester University Press.

SUMMARY:Bunker Talk #165: Stephen Sutcliffe
DESCRIPTION:Please register on Eventbrite if you wish to attend. \n\n\n\nA video recording of this talk will be available from 19 June. \n\n\n\nUK based artist Stephen Sutcliffe (1968\, Harrogate) creates and exhibits films\, collages\, wall paintings and photographs from an extensive archive of material he has been amassing since childhood\, together with items found in institutional collections. Often reflecting on aspects of British culture and identity and having literary origins\, the results are melancholic\, poetic and satirical amalgams which subtly tease out and critique ideas of class-consciousness and cultural authority. Employing an extensive editing process Sutcliffe’s works subvert predominant narratives\, generating alternative readings through the juxtaposition and layering of both found and self-generated material. \n\n\n\nRecent solo exhibitions include\, Psychopomp\, Moon Grove 2026\, You Can Come in But You Won’t Like it\, Rob Tufnell 2023\, High Windows\, Dead Birds\, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2019). Sex Symbols in Sandwich Signs\, Talbot Rice Edinburgh\, Twixt Cup and Lip\, Hepworth Wakefield (2017)\, Going Over\, Rob Tufnell\, London (2015)\, Outwork and Workings Out\, Tramway\, Glasgow (2013). In 2018 he participated in the Manchester International Festival in collaboration with Graham Eatough on a film for the Whitworth Gallery No End to Enderby\, for which they won the Contemporary Arts Society Award. He has been shortlisted for the Jarman Award twice and in 2012 he won the Margaret Tait Award. In 2019 he had two books published\, at Fifty (Sternberg Press) a monograph and Much Obliged\, (Book Works) a kind of autobiography. That year\, he curated a Herbert Read Archive exhibition at Leeds University’s Brotherton Library with Pavillion\, accompanied by the video City of Dreadful Something. In 2024 he presented Memories of the Five Administrations\, a joint exhibition with Simon Bedwell at Beaconsfield Gallery\, London.

SUMMARY:Bunker Talk #164: Benedict L Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Please register on Eventbrite if you wish to attend. \n\n\n\nA video recording of this talk will be available from 5 June. \n\n\n\nAn A-Z of neurodivergent ideas \n\n\n\nBenedict Phillips is an established artist\, curator\, and consultant. His practice is eclectic\, encompassing a broad range of methodologies\, generating work as diverse as public art\, performance\, sculpture\, photography\, and media art. He is particularly concerned with the ongoing interrelationship and shifting hierarchy between photography\, sculpture and performance within his practice\, and the aesthetics of each approach. Exploiting historical production processes as well as more recent digitally driven approaches informs the making of much of his work. \n\n\n\nBenedict has been making neuro-affirmative art projects for 35 years and recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of his manifesto and artwork The Agenda of the Agresiv Dislecksick\, published in Disability Arts in London (DAIL)\, 1995. \n\n\n\nBenedict is currently developing a project that encompasses and reflects on the past\, present\, and possible futures of neurodivergent creative practice. He has recently rescued the Art Dyslexic Trust Archive\, which encompasses the period 1992 to 2012\, from destruction. \n\n\n\nBenedict is Director and founding member of several arts groups and organisations\, including: Field Study (est. 1993\, book art and mail group); Digital Media Labs (est. 2010\, professional development residencies for artists); Lens Lab Project (est. 2020\, a not-for-profit socially engaged photographic community-focused organisation). Benedict has been a regular guest lecturer at universities in the UK and the USA over the past 25 years\, delivering professional development and artist talks\, and he is a member of the expert panel at Manchester School of Architecture.

SUMMARY:PhD-Led Seminar: 'Everything\, Everywhere\, All at Once: Construction site atmospheres and digital practices'
DESCRIPTION:PhD-Led Seminar Series 7  \n\n\n\nA series of informal seminars led by and for Arts & Humanities doctoral students. Each seminar is presented by a different PhD researcher and involves plenty of interactive discussion. This is a friendly\, supportive space in which we develop critical research skills and build community.  \n\n\n\nSeminar 7.1: Everything\, Everywhere\, All at Once: Construction site atmospheres and digital practices \n\n\n\nWhen & Where: Thursday 19th March 2026 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2:30 pm for in-person attendees. Tea\, coffee\, juice\, and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Loretta Lipworth. Loretta is a final year PhD researcher. Her project examines the relationship between affective atmospheres (i.e. mood\, vibe\, or how a place feels) and Building Information Modelling (BIM)\, which is a digital technology and process used in the management of construction projects. \n\n\n\nFormat/topic: Loretta will lead this session with an overview of her PhD research\, including key findings and discussion points that move through atmospheres of optimism\, uncertainty and negativity. Attendees will be invited to see\, hear and feel experiences from the field\, in order to critically engage with the atmospheres concept and implications of the research. \n\n\n\nPreparation: There is no pre-reading for this session but for Q&A and discussion you may want to consider: How do your own emotions and sensory experiences figure in your research? Are you challenging any orthodoxies or busting any myths in your thesis? Which literatures/disciplines do you draw on and are there conceptual crossovers with other disciplines? \n\n\n\nIf you would like to attend: Email Domenic Suntrapak at 22588709@stu.mmu.ac.uk by 12:30 pm Friday 13th March to say whether you would like to attend online or in person\, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).

SUMMARY:Writing Poems Through the Guidebook Form: Workshop with Anita Slater
DESCRIPTION:‘No\, you are not\, not\, not to look at your Baedeker…We will simply drift’ – Writing Poems Through the Guidebook Form \n\n\n\nDo you ever feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice? Or do you get stressed out if there are too many (or too few) instructions? These poetry workshops run by writer and researcher Anita Slater will probably solve nothing and make you feel way more confused\, but you’ll (hopefully) have a lot of fun. \n\n\n\nJoin Anita for a series of three poetry workshops with various writing prompts centred around ‘guidance experiments’- you are welcome to sign up to one workshop\, join for an hour of one (they will be self-contained)\, or sign up to all three. We will explore the relationship between the guidebook form and the poem\, thinking about issues around standardised instructions\, but also romanticised ideas around ‘getting lost’\, and we will consider methods of alternative learning. Whichever one you attend\, you will leave with a draft of at least one poem and lots of ideas\, and I will collect (with permission) scraps from each of the workshops to turn into a small pamphlet. \n\n\n\nRead below for more details about each workshop and to sign up for free here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/writing-poems-through-the-guidebook-form-workshop-with-anita-slater-tickets-1984461759543 \n\n\n\n2-hour workshop (with coffee break\, second hour hybrid) Wednesday March 18th 10am-12pm \n\n\n\nWe will discuss the concept of alternative touring and ‘poetry tours’ and take a local tour of our own\, and then we will use prompts to write our own wandering poems/ pieces. \n\n\n\n2-hour workshop (with coffee break\, second hour hybrid) Thursday March 19th 1pm-3pm \n\n\n\nWe will use ‘guided’ materials to make found poems playing with the themes of instruction and admin. \n\n\n\n2-hour workshop (with coffee break\, second hour hybrid) Friday March 20th 1pm-3pm \n\n\n\nWe will make poetry sculptures and scenes\, considering the place of the poem in urban space.

SUMMARY:Demystifying the PhD Viva
DESCRIPTION:GE 2.06 and on Teams. \n\n\n\nWhat is a Viva? How long will it last? What kinds of questions will you be asked? How should you prepare? Although the PhD viva can often be a source of anxiety as you come towards the end of your research project\, it’s also a brilliant opportunity to have researchers from outside your project engage closely and constructively with your work. In the first half of the session Derek Bousfield\, Head of DCAHF and Professor in Linguistics will talk about the viva from the perspective of a supervisor and examiner. In the second half of the session we’ll hear from MMU graduates who have recently successfully defended their theses.

SUMMARY:DoWell Co-design Lecture Series 2025-2026: Session 3. Co-Designing Through Play: Remixing Ideas\, Stories\, and Systems
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Prof. Sylvester Arnab is Professor of Game Science and Ludic Design at the Centre for Postdigital Cultures\, Coventry University\, specialising in playful and remixing-based approaches to co-design\, storytelling\, and collaborative problem-solving. \n\n\n\nTopic: This interactive lecture and hands-on workshop explores co-design through the lens of playful thinking and remixing practice. Drawing from the Remixing Play framework and the What’s Your Story? empathy cards\, participants will experience how play can be used as a method for co-creating meaningful\, inclusive\, and contextually grounded solutions. The session introduces the principles of remixing play\, i.e.\, reimagining familiar games\, rules\, and narratives to address real-world challenges\, and demonstrates how storytelling and game design can foster empathy\, creativity\, and collaboration within diverse teams. Through a fast-paced\, collaborative activity\, participants will form small groups to co-design a prototype for a playful experience or game using prompts from both card sets. By the end of the session\, they will have hands-on insights into how co-design can empower communities to reframe challenges\, connect perspectives\, and imagine new possibilities through play

SUMMARY:Kathryn Hurlock: Writing for Trade Audiences
DESCRIPTION:GE 2.06 and on Teams. \n\n\n\nThis workshop offers the opportunity to think about how to write about your research for public audiences and how to go about getting published with a trade press. Kathryn Hurlock is Professor of Religious and Military History. In 2025 Kathryn’s book Holy Places: How Pilgrimage Changed the World was published with Profile Books. In this book\, she follows the trail of pilgrimage through nineteen sacred sites – from the temples of Jerusalem to the banks of the Ganges\, by way of Iona\, Lourdes\, Amritsar and Buenos Aires – revealing the many ways in which this ancient practice has shaped our religions and our world. Kathryn will share wisdom from her experience of writing and publishing this book\, and you’ll have an opportunity to think about how you might pitch your research for a public audience.
