SUMMARY:Writers’ Retreat with Chad McDonald
DESCRIPTION:In-person only in GE 2.06. \n\n\n\nWriters’ Retreats give PhD students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities the opportunity to devote a whole day to writing in a quiet\, structured\, and supportive atmosphere. The retreats are facilitated by Dr Chad McDonald\, the faculty’s Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutor. You will need to arrive ‘ready to write’ but may\, of course\, bring any materials (laptops\, books\, data\, etc.) with you for the whole-day session. There will be some short discussion around good writing practice and how to approach your writing as a professional task\, but much of the day will be devoted to writing without distraction. Whatever your writing project (e.g.\, annual report\, paper\, thesis)\, the retreat will provide a space away from your office or home in which to concentrate and reflect on the process of writing. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Critical Thinking and Critical Reading
DESCRIPTION:GE 2.06 and on Teams. \n\n\n\nWithin this session we will discuss easily memorable approaches to engaging in critical thinking around your own reading of published research\, with a view to building skills and abilities in critiquing work ahead of incorporation into your own thesis. To complement this\, we will engage in the critical reading and deconstruction of an easy to read paper from linguistics\, exploring how even published papers of limited value and argumentation can be published\, and the danger in relying on\, or trusting everything written in black and white. Derek (who is running the class) will provide the paper for reading and critiquing at least a week before the session\, so please ensure you have signed up well in advance in order to receive the paper for critique.

SUMMARY:Seminar 6.9: Wendy Allen
DESCRIPTION:Seminar 6.9: Barbara Hepworth and the self never sculpted: Can Hepworth’s use of the maquette in her sculptural practice inform a new creative practice in poetry? \n\n\n\nWhen and where: Thursday 11th September 2025 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30pm for in-person attendees. Tea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Wendy Allen. Wendy is a poet and is in her 3rd year of full-time PhD research. Her creative-critical thesis considers Barbara Hepworth’s (1903-1975) use of the maquette to inform a re-making of poetic form. Focussing on the precariousness of the maquette\, Wendy suggests that by disrupting the idea of the final model as superior enables a new poetics to emerge\, one which gives equal placing to the inner workings and measuring of (a) form. \n\n\n\nFormat/topic: Wendy will begin the session by introducing the maquette: a small preliminary model created to test ideas and proportions. Maquettes are often overlooked\, lost or destroyed\, and yet\, when they are considered independently\, are crucial sites of thought\, experimentation and becoming. Through feminist theory and the Maquinette (a sequence of disrupted sonnets)\, Wendy suggests that the maquette enables a re-evaluation of how we see these unseen contributions. \n\n\n\nThere will be a discussion following the paper\, and it may be of interest to consider the inter-disciplinary aspect to the research (Creative Writing and Art History) in terms of a broader context and how this could work with other disciplines. \n\n\n\nPreparation: You do not need to read anything beforehand\, but it may be of interest to look at some images of Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures and maquettes. \n\n\n\nTea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nEmail Loretta to say whether you would like to attend online or in person\, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).

SUMMARY:Seminar 6.8: Manchester’s queer sonics
DESCRIPTION:When and where: Thursday 28th August 2025 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30pm for in-person attendees. Tea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Markus Hetheier. Markus is a 5th year part-time practice-based PhD candidate at the School of Digital Arts (SODA). His artistic research project involves queer sonic mappings of Manchester (co-)produced by ten research participants and him. The project focuses on queer sonics as a transformative tool for community building. \n\n\n\nFormat/topic: Markus will begin the session by a brief introduction of his PhD project\, focusing on the intersection of methodological and theoretical concepts with practice as research as overall approach. He will then present and discuss the research participants’ individual queer sonic mappings of Manchester and the themes which have emerged from the practice. The session will be concluded with an open discussion and Q&A. \n\n\n\nPreparation: If you want to familiarise yourself with queer sonics\, you are welcome to read Truman\, S. E. and Shannon\, D. B. (2018) ‘Queer sonic cultures: an affective walking-composing project’\, Capacious: journal for emerging affect inquiry\, 3(1)\, pp. 58—77. \n\n\n\nFor the discussion and Q&A you may want to think about the following questions: How do we define co-production in artistic research projects? Which role does the researcher have when they are also an artist\, facilitator and curator in the project? What influence \n\n\n\nEmail Loretta to say whether you would like to attend online or in person\, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).

SUMMARY:August: Writer's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Writers’ Retreats give postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities the opportunity to devote a whole day to writing in a quiet\, structured\, and supportive atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe retreats are facilitated by Dr Chad McDonald\, the faculty’s Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutor. Chad was awarded his PhD in History in 2019\, and he regularly took part in writers’ retreats during his postgraduate research. \n\n\n\nYou will need to arrive ‘ready to write’ but may\, of course\, bring any materials (laptops\, books\, data\, etc.) with you for the whole-day session. You may access data online\, but the retreat is a day free from active researching\, mobile phones\, or other internet access (emails\, Instagram\, online shopping\, etc.) that steals away focus and attention from writing! \n\n\n\nThere will be some short discussion around good writing practice and how to approach your writing as a professional task\, but much of the day will be devoted to writing without distraction. Whatever your writing project (e.g.\, annual report\, paper\, thesis)\, the retreat will provide a space away from your office or home in which to concentrate and reflect on the process of writing. \n\n\n\nWe hope the writers’ retreats will be a source of collegial support as you work alongside fellow PGRs who share similar goals—but also pressures and insecurities—in relation to academic writing. \n\n\n\nLunch and refreshments will be provided. Please notify us of any dietary requirements no later than 2 weeks before the date of the retreat you are attending. \n\n\n\nPlaces are limited so please email Fran Brooks if you wish to book a spot.

SUMMARY:Seminar 6.7: Sumithreyi Sivapalan
DESCRIPTION:A series of informal seminars led by and for Arts and Humanities doctoral students. Each seminar is presented by a different PhD researcher and involves plenty of interactive discussion. This is a friendly\, supportive space in which we develop critical research skills and build community. \n\n\n\nSeminar 6.7: Sites of Belonging and Unhomeliness: exploring ‘home’ through the persona poetry of Sri Lankan women \n\n\n\nWhen and where: Thursday 14th August 2025 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30pm for in-person attendees. Tea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Sumithreyi Sivapalan. Sumi is in her 3rd year of PhD research. Her thesis links the concepts of home and belonging with persona poetry and the civil war and post-war context of Sri Lanka\, and the possibility that persona poetry might serve as a site of belonging for those who feel ‘unhomely’ in their homeland or in their host country. \n\n\n\nFormat/topic: Sumi will lead this session with a brief introduction to the question of belonging in Sri Lanka and the historical and present struggles related to it. She will then introduce her research on persona poems\, linking them to critical theories of home and belonging. Attendees will be encouraged to consider when and how one can truly feel at home. \n\n\n\nPreparation: There is no pre-reading for this session\, but attendees may wish to read a brief introduction to Sri Lanka and the civil war (e.g. Wiki\, BBC\, or HIR) and persona poetry. \n\n\n\nGrosvenor East room 2.06 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30 pm for in-person attendees. \n\n\n\nTea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nEmail Loretta to say whether you would like to attend online or in person\, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).

SUMMARY:Gothic Crossroads Conference 2025
DESCRIPTION:A conference exploring and celebrating the multi and interdisciplinary crossings of Gothic and Horror Studies. \n\n\n\nManchester Centre for Gothic Studies\,Manchester Metropolitan University\, 25th-27th June\, 2025 \n\n\n\n\nConference Programme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event is free for all MMU students and includes creative workshops\, readings and reading groups – you’re welcome to attend as much or as little as you like. The Gothic and Heritage fair includes representatives from 10 different heritage organisations\, including Elizabeth Gaskell’s House\, the Portico library\, the Whitaker museum and gallery\, Hoghton Tower and Gladstone’s Library. \n\n\n\nFeel free to contact Emma Liggins ) or Ellie Beal if you would like more information. \n\n\n\nPhysical crossroads have long been sites where the human\, divine and demonic were felt to converge and potent sites for magical\, religious encounters\, rituals of transformation\, binding of undesirable spirits\, siting of gallows and links to ancient cosmology. This conference also considers the crossroads as a space where the boundaries between differing spheres are negotiable\, asking what it means to walk in the interdisciplinary pathways and cross currents of the Gothic. \n\n\n\nThe crossroad is a geographical location and ancient symbol closely associated with folklore where two or more realms touch. It is historically and imaginatively connected with travellers and travelling\, strange encounters\, omens\, choice and indecision\, danger\, suicide\, criminality\, apocalypse and renewal\, guilt and judgement\, punishment\, ritual and ceremony\, lovers’ meetings\, hanging\, summoning\, access to Gods\, devil dealing\, casting out and death. The choice between paths can also lead to repercussions and consequences of “the wrong path”\, “the path not taken” and “straying from the path”. \n\n\n\nThis conference invites creative and scholarly consideration of any aspect of these areas or any other creative/critical spin on themes of crossing/crossover/cross currents\, travelling\, intersection\, interception\, (con)junction\, incursion\, deviation and transitioning in any/all aspects of cultural production as it relates to Gothic and horror. \n\n\n\nIt also proposes the crossing as a metaphor for presenting and thinking on the interdisciplinary work of the Gothic and the intersectional/transnational spaces where the gothic is engaged and approached. Thus\, we are particularly interested in “paths less travelled” and contributions from scholars and ECRs working in the intersections where the cultural work of Gothic and horror studies crosses boundaries and spheres\, engaging with fields and disciplines beyond the traditional\, and where new “crossings” can be discovered. This includes\, but is not limited to: Gothic and horror in gaming\, architecture and heritage\, creative writing and practice\, comics and graphic novels\, scriptwriting\, theatre\, music\, geography\, plant studies and environmentalism\, anthropology\, libraries and archives\, sociology and social studies\, broadcasting\, publishing\, media and graphic design. We are sure there are more\, so feel free to surprise us with your wanders\, crossings\, and encounters!
