SUMMARY:Book Launch: Routledge Companion to Irish Art
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to celebrate the launch of the Routledge Companion to Irish Art (2025) edited by Dr Fionna Barber (Reader in Art History\, Dept of Art and Performance\, Manchester Metropolitan University) and Dr Fintan Cullen (Emeritus Professor of Art History\, University of Nottingham). The launch is hosted by the Visual Culture Research Group at MMU. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place in the First Floor Open Space\, Righton Building. Please register by 18th June if possible so we can have an idea of numbers for catering. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing a short introduction by Susannah Thompson\, Professor of Fine Art\, MMU\, the book’s two editors Fionna Barber and Fintan Cullen will talk about the scope of the book\, and its significance for studies of Irish art from the beginnings of the 19th c to the present day\, in addition to reflecting on the process of commissioning\, and editing such a large volume. Dr Matt Retallick (Lecturer in Art History and Curating\, MMU) will also talk about his experience of contributing a chapter to the Companion. \n\n\n\nThere’ll also be time for more informal discussion with refreshments provided. \n\n\n\nThis is the first publication of a companion to Irish art and its history. Its forty-four commissioned essays comprise a sustained critical commentary on a range of topics across a period from c.1800-2020. This companion contains new and innovative writing that critically engages with Irish art in a period linked to key events in Irish history\, beginning with the Acts of Union between Britain and Ireland (1800–01)) and the significant social and cultural changes that resulted. The book also provides a precedent for a focus on the significance of art in relation to other subsequent key historical events such as the early twentieth‑century struggles for independence or the role of political conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s onwards and its aftermath. Key themes covered include tradition and innovation; upheavals of history; place\, location\, and artistic formations; Irish art and the wider world; and embodiment and identity. The book expands the critical discourse around Irish art over this period\, both within Ireland and beyond\, and encourages the potential for future scholarship in fields and periods not covered. \n\n\n\nThis book will be of interest to scholars and students working in art history\, Irish studies\, and colonial studies. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register by 18th June if possible so we can have an idea of numbers for catering. \n\n\n\nContact: Fionna Barber or Matt Retallick for further details

SUMMARY:Postponed: Practice-based Conversations: Mapping Methods and Methodologies with Sara Davies
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately this Practice-based Conversation has to be postponed. We’re sorry about this\, but Sara’s session on Mapping Methods and Methodologies will be back in the new academic year. \n\n\n\nThe Poetry Library (round table) and Online via Teams \n\n\n\nThis is a peer-led event organised by Nicola Lewis-Dixon \n\n\n\nThinking about methods and methodologies in arts and design practice-based research can be challenging. There may be multiple methods involved\, making it hard to pinpoint a single methodology that fits the project. The project might draw from multiple disciplines\, each with its own set of methods and terminologies\, adding further complexity to the mix. Additionally\, the dynamic and evolving nature of this kind of research can call for sometimes unsettling shifts in approaches. \n\n\n\nHave you recently read something about methods and methodologies in arts and design practice-based research? What methods and methodologies do you use in your research? Let’s gather and share! You could bring in something you’ve read\, something you’ve written\, or some interesting thoughts. \n\n\n\nSara Davies is a lecturer in Art Theory and Practice in the Manchester School of Art

DESCRIPTION:Manchester Poetry Library and online \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin poets Mark Pajak\, Anita Slater\, and Domenic Suntrapak for a poetry reading and discussion as they untangle the threads that link their poetry and research at Manchester Metropolitan University. \n\n\n\nMark Pajak’s PhD research explores the question of what poetry does for young lives by working with children in schools\, Anita Slater’s practice-based research looks at the concept of guidance in the city\, and Domenic Suntrapak researches the relationship between poetry\, architecture and urban city planning. In this conversation Mark\, Anita and Domenic will reflect on their interest in the social function of poetry\, thinking about how poetry interacts with institutions\, communities\, civic spaces\, and even expansive urban cityscapes. As researchers working across the creative and the critical\, they will also talk about their play with form\, and how formal experiments are shaping their writing and thinking. \n\n\n\n\nFree Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nENTANGLED is a PhD showcase which unravels the themes and forms which connect each poet’s work to one another\, established by award winning poet and PhD researcher Charlotte Shevchenko Knight.

SUMMARY:Guest seminar: Responding to violent extremism
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime seminar: Responding to violent extremism – resilience and rehabilitation.Wednesday June 18\, 12-1:30pm \n\n\n\nRoom BS 7.03This seminar provides an opportunity to hear from two leading Australian scholars\, Ramon Spaaij (Victoria University; Manchester Met Global Chair) and Vivian Gerrand\, PhD (Deakin University)\, exploring novel approaches to countering violent extremism. It will feature a 15-minute presentation from each speaker\, followed by a facilitated conversation and an audience Q&A. \n\n\n\nLunch will be provided. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaper 1: Facilitating disengagement from violent extremism \n\n\n\nProfessor Ramon Spaaij \n\n\n\nThe rehabilitation of terrorist offenders continues to be viewed with suspicion\, which is not helped by the limited evidence base for the success of disengagement programs. This presentation aims to advance the knowledge base by sharing the findings of recent research on facilitating disengagement from violent extremism. Drawing on a three-year mixed-methods inquiry into Australia’s longest-running Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program\, I will present a focus on the experiences of terrorist offenders to chart their journeys through the program. By doing so\, I will identify key factors that affect meaningful engagement with CVE interventions and enhance the likelihood of successful disengagement from violent extremism. \n\n\n\nProfessor Ramon Spaaij is a sociologist at Victoria University\, Melbourne\, Australia\, and Global Chair at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is co-founder of the Applied Security Science Partnership (ASSP)\, a unique high-impact research program that brings together researchers\, embedded police\, defence and community members to develop novel responses to terrorism and violent extremism. \n\n\n\nPaper 2: Building resilience to (violent) misogyny? Alternative narratives to the manosphere \n\n\n\nDr Vivian Gerrand \n\n\n\nEfforts to mitigate the social influence of (violent) extremist movements through CVE counter-narrative campaigns or deplatforming initiatives have limited efficacy (Conway 2020; Hemmingsen and Castrob2017; Rogers 2020). Unlike counter-narratives\, alternative narratives can be more effective at challenging extremist narratives because they directly address real and perceived grievances as well as the psycho-social needs that may lead to engagement with extremist discourse. Alternative narratives meet people where they are and support critical-thinking and social capital resource allocation. Such narratives stand for rather than against something by conveying positive content\, centring on aspects of democracy and openness and promoting mutual understanding (Roose et al. 2021). Alternative narrative-based interventions can arguably be deployed to disarm the manosphere and support disengagement from violent extremist discourses. Drawing on interviews with manosphere adherents and an arts-based case study\, in this presentation I explore how alternative narratives might provide critically empathetic tools to support boys and men to build resilience and disengage from anti-women online movements.  \n\n\n\nDr Vivian Gerrand is a Research Fellow at the Alfred Deakin Institute\, Deakin University. Her current research addresses disinformation and (violent) extremism through alternative narratives. Vivian holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and is the author of Possible Spaces of Somali Belonging (MUP\, 2016). She was a Max Weber Fellow in 2017-18. \n\n\n\nThis seminar is hosted by Manchester Met’s Migration and Interdisciplinary Global Studies Research Network\, and chaired by Dr Daniel Marshall. SUMMARY:June: Writer's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Writers’ Retreats give postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities the opportunity to devote a whole day to writing in a quiet\, structured\, and supportive atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe retreats are facilitated by Dr Chad McDonald\, the faculty’s Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutor. Chad was awarded his PhD in History in 2019\, and he regularly took part in writers’ retreats during his postgraduate research. \n\n\n\nYou will need to arrive ‘ready to write’ but may\, of course\, bring any materials (laptops\, books\, data\, etc.) with you for the whole-day session. You may access data online\, but the retreat is a day free from active researching\, mobile phones\, or other internet access (emails\, Instagram\, online shopping\, etc.) that steals away focus and attention from writing! \n\n\n\nThere will be some short discussion around good writing practice and how to approach your writing as a professional task\, but much of the day will be devoted to writing without distraction. Whatever your writing project (e.g.\, annual report\, paper\, thesis)\, the retreat will provide a space away from your office or home in which to concentrate and reflect on the process of writing. \n\n\n\nWe hope the writers’ retreats will be a source of collegial support as you work alongside fellow PGRs who share similar goals—but also pressures and insecurities—in relation to academic writing. \n\n\n\nLunch and refreshments will be provided. Please notify us of any dietary requirements no later than 2 weeks before the date of the retreat you are attending. \n\n\n\nPlaces are limited so please email Fran Brooks if you wish to book a spot.

SUMMARY:Seminar 6.1: Please Mind The Gap: Entanglement of poetry\, ceramics and textiles
DESCRIPTION:When & where: Thursday 22nd May 2025 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30pm for in-person attendees. Tea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nPresenter: LOkesh Ghai. LOkesh is a 1st year Fashion\, practice-based PhD candidate. He is investigating the intersection of queerness\, craft and activism\, using shoes as a vehicle for research. His research is funded by the NWCDTP\, and he undertakes fieldwork in India and the UK. \n\n\n\nFormat/topic: Through a visual presentation LOkesh will reflect on a research-based artistic practice and the ability of things to become alive in the ‘flow’ of life. The project has layers of entanglement that include queer lens\, poetry\, ceramics\, dress\, clothing\, textiles\, maps and a childhood memory; while moving in and out of museums in London. Participants will be encouraged to ponder the combination of things that bring ‘flow’ to a thing they move with during their ongoing research. \n\n\n\nPreparation: There is no preparation necessary for this session. Interested attendees are highly encouraged to read Ingold\, T. (2010) Bringing things back to life: Creative entanglements in a world of materials. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to attend: Email Loretta at 21441661@stu.mmu.ac.uk to say whether you would like to attend online or in person\, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).

SUMMARY:Practice-based Conversations: Encounters with Archives with Hannah Singleton
DESCRIPTION:This event takes place at The Poetry Library (round table) and Online via Teams. \n\n\n\nThis session is peer-led\, and organised by Nicola Lewis-Dixon – please email Nicola or Fran Brooks if you’d like to come in person so that we can order the right amount of coffee and snacks. \n\n\n\nThis session will explore some of the practicalities of how arts and humanities researchers might identify\, visit and use archives within their work\, alongside thinking about how these institutional spaces can pose challenges\, or where we might need to actively resist or question the stories (apparently) told. \n\n\n\nDr Hannah Singleton is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art and Performance within Manchester School of Art\, teaching theory units with a particular emphasis on material cultures\, place and identity. Recent work explores séance in contemporary art practice and archives of mediumship; the legacy of the Pendle Witches through the analysis of material culture and artworks; writing in development connects folk horror\, objects\, and craft within filmic landscapes. Her PhD research explored the physical and immaterial traces of performance and temporal artworks through alternative and artistic archival approaches. Member of the Dark Arts Research Kollective (DVRK)\, and also The Stones Project\, a collaborative research project which examines how we represent and experience ancient and modern standing stones focusing on themes of affect\, materiality\, mythology and temporality.

SUMMARY:Interpretation\, Curation and Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At Manchester Poetry Library\, our exhibitions have taken an increasingly formative role in research development. Rather than simply serving as a research output or an isolated engagement activity\, our exhibitions have intersected with staff and PGR’s research journeys at different stages. This session will begin with a preview of Manchester Poetry Library’s new summer exhibition curated by the Manchester Writing School’s Dr Malika Booker. We will consider practical curation skills as well as some theoretical underpinnings of a co-creative approach. \n\n\n\nThis event takes place in the Poetry Library with Martin Kratz or online\, the link for Teams is available via Moodle.

SUMMARY:Pigs in Chinatown: A Discussion on Fiction and Film with André Forget
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening presented by the Manchester Writing School and the Pop Screen Cultures Research Group – André Forget in conversation with Reuben Martens. \n\n\n\nCanadian novelist André Forget will be reading from and talking about his debut novel\, In the City of Pigs (2022\, Dundurn Press)\, which chronicles the story of a failed musician obsessed with avant-garde art who enters a shadowy world where bohemian excess meets the avaricious interests of a real estate cabal in Toronto\, ON. \n\n\n\nAndré and Reuben will also talk about the influence of the 1974 neo-noir film Chinatown (dir. Roman Polanski) on André’s writing\, and how the filmic medium can inspire the novel writing process. They will also discuss how art is used and abused under the neoliberal capitalist system\, its role in people’s lives\, and the way narrative gives structure and meaning to experience. \n\n\n\nThe event will open with a drinks reception and a small array of amuse-gueule (alcohol-free and vegetarian / vegan options will be available). SUMMARY:April: Writer’s Retreat
