SUMMARY:Looking Ahead to the Annual Review
DESCRIPTION:Annual Progress Reviews (APRs) give you the opportunity to demonstrate your research progress and receive formal feedback from academic reviewers. These take place annually and doctoral students must complete each review satisfactorily in order to progress to the next year of their research programme. In this informal session we’ll talk about what to expect from the Annual Progress Review\, how to prepare for it\, and the different ways of using it to help your development as a researcher. Come with your questions and queries. \n\n\n\nThis event is in person and online\, the link for Teams is available via the Moodle area\, with Anna Bergqvist.

SUMMARY:Transnational Popular Print in the Long Nineteenth Century: Hybrid Seminar
DESCRIPTION:This even will take place in Geoffrey Mantion G.09A and online. \n\n\n\nThis afternoon research seminar provides an opportunity to trace the transnational dimensions of print culture in the long nineteenth century. It explores the uneven dynamics of both popular and personal print networks\, as conveyed across borders in a range of modes\, forms\, and media. Our guest speakers include Dr Jeroen Salman (Utrecht)\, Dr Clara Dawson (Manchester)\, and Dr Clare Horrocks (LJMU). We are also excited to showcase some of our own research talent. Dr Jodie Matthews will be delivering a paper entitled “Follow the Plants: Rhizomatic Reading Across Borders” and PhD candidates Sarah Dutson\, Rebecca Alaise\, Haseeb Khan\, and Gareth Rees will be participating in a ‘PhD: Work in Progress’ panel. \n\n\n\nFurther info and registration for the event is available here. \n\n\n\nPlease Note: This is a hybrid event\, which will be hosted in person and online via Teams. Please ensure you select the appropriate ticket. \n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is hosted by the Long Nineteenth-Century Network at Man Met as part of the North-West Long Nineteenth-Century Research Seminar. We would like to thank the Manchester Jean Monnet Centre for Excellence for their support for this event.

SUMMARY:April: Writer’s Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Writers’ Retreats give postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities the opportunity to devote a whole day to writing in a quiet\, structured\, and supportive atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe retreats are facilitated by Dr Chad McDonald\, the faculty’s Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutor. Chad was awarded his PhD in History in 2019\, and he regularly took part in writers’ retreats during his postgraduate research. \n\n\n\nYou will need to arrive ‘ready to write’ but may\, of course\, bring any materials (laptops\, books\, data\, etc.) with you for the whole-day session. You may access data online\, but the retreat is a day free from active researching\, mobile phones\, or other internet access (emails\, Instagram\, online shopping\, etc.) that steals away focus and attention from writing! \n\n\n\nThere will be some short discussion around good writing practice and how to approach your writing as a professional task\, but much of the day will be devoted to writing without distraction. Whatever your writing project (e.g.\, annual report\, paper\, thesis)\, the retreat will provide a space away from your office or home in which to concentrate and reflect on the process of writing. \n\n\n\nWe hope the writers’ retreats will be a source of collegial support as you work alongside fellow PGRs who share similar goals—but also pressures and insecurities—in relation to academic writing. \n\n\n\nLunch and refreshments will be provided. Please notify us of any dietary requirements no later than 2 weeks before the date of the retreat you are attending. \n\n\n\nPlaces are limited so please email Fran Brooks if you wish to book a spot.

SUMMARY:Pigs in Chinatown: A Discussion on Fiction and Film with André Forget
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening presented by the Manchester Writing School and the Pop Screen Cultures Research Group – André Forget in conversation with Reuben Martens. \n\n\n\nCanadian novelist André Forget will be reading from and talking about his debut novel\, In the City of Pigs (2022\, Dundurn Press)\, which chronicles the story of a failed musician obsessed with avant-garde art who enters a shadowy world where bohemian excess meets the avaricious interests of a real estate cabal in Toronto\, ON. \n\n\n\nAndré and Reuben will also talk about the influence of the 1974 neo-noir film Chinatown (dir. Roman Polanski) on André’s writing\, and how the filmic medium can inspire the novel writing process. They will also discuss how art is used and abused under the neoliberal capitalist system\, its role in people’s lives\, and the way narrative gives structure and meaning to experience. \n\n\n\nThe event will open with a drinks reception and a small array of amuse-gueule (alcohol-free and vegetarian / vegan options will be available). Excerpts from the film Chinatown will be screened. If you have any questions ahead of the event or for the Q&A\, please email R.Martens@mmu.ac.uk. \n\n\n\nPlease use the Eventbrite link\, below\, to sign up (free admission). \n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the author: \n\n\n\nAndré Forget was born in Toronto and now lives in Sheffield. He is the author of In the City of Pigs (2022\, Dundurn Press) and the editor of After Realism: Twenty-four Stories for the Twenty-first Century\, an anthology of short fiction published by Véhicule Press in 2022. He has written journalism and literary criticism for a variety of publications in Canada and the United States\, including The Walrus\, Maisonneuve\, The Globe and Mail\, The Literary Review of Canada\, and Southwest Review\, and he is currently working on his second novel. \n\n\n\nAbout the moderator: \n\n\n\nReuben Martens is a poet\, sound artist\, screenwriter\, and Lecturer in Film & Media Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. SUMMARY:Interpretation\, Curation and Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At Manchester Poetry Library\, our exhibitions have taken an increasingly formative role in research development. Rather than simply serving as a research output or an isolated engagement activity\, our exhibitions have intersected with staff and PGR’s research journeys at different stages. This session will begin with a preview of Manchester Poetry Library’s new summer exhibition curated by the Manchester Writing School’s Dr Malika Booker. We will consider practical curation skills as well as some theoretical underpinnings of a co-creative approach. \n\n\n\nThis event takes place in the Poetry Library with Martin Kratz or online\, the link for Teams is available via Moodle.
