SUMMARY:Seminar 6.7: Sumithreyi Sivapalan
DESCRIPTION:A series of informal seminars led by and for Arts and Humanities doctoral students. Each seminar is presented by a different PhD researcher and involves plenty of interactive discussion. This is a friendly\, supportive space in which we develop critical research skills and build community. \n\n\n\nSeminar 6.7: Sites of Belonging and Unhomeliness: exploring ‘home’ through the persona poetry of Sri Lankan women \n\n\n\nWhen and where: Thursday 14th August 2025 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30pm for in-person attendees. Tea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Sumithreyi Sivapalan. Sumi is in her 3rd year of PhD research. Her thesis links the concepts of home and belonging with persona poetry and the civil war and post-war context of Sri Lanka\, and the possibility that persona poetry might serve as a site of belonging for those who feel ‘unhomely’ in their homeland or in their host country. \n\n\n\nFormat/topic: Sumi will lead this session with a brief introduction to the question of belonging in Sri Lanka and the historical and present struggles related to it. She will then introduce her research on persona poems\, linking them to critical theories of home and belonging. Attendees will be encouraged to consider when and how one can truly feel at home. \n\n\n\nPreparation: There is no pre-reading for this session\, but attendees may wish to read a brief introduction to Sri Lanka and the civil war (e.g. Wiki\, BBC\, or HIR) and persona poetry. \n\n\n\nGrosvenor East room 2.06 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30 pm for in-person attendees. \n\n\n\nTea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nEmail Loretta to say whether you would like to attend online or in person\, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).

SUMMARY:August: Writer's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Writers’ Retreats give postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities the opportunity to devote a whole day to writing in a quiet\, structured\, and supportive atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe retreats are facilitated by Dr Chad McDonald\, the faculty’s Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutor. Chad was awarded his PhD in History in 2019\, and he regularly took part in writers’ retreats during his postgraduate research. \n\n\n\nYou will need to arrive ‘ready to write’ but may\, of course\, bring any materials (laptops\, books\, data\, etc.) with you for the whole-day session. You may access data online\, but the retreat is a day free from active researching\, mobile phones\, or other internet access (emails\, Instagram\, online shopping\, etc.) that steals away focus and attention from writing! \n\n\n\nThere will be some short discussion around good writing practice and how to approach your writing as a professional task\, but much of the day will be devoted to writing without distraction. Whatever your writing project (e.g.\, annual report\, paper\, thesis)\, the retreat will provide a space away from your office or home in which to concentrate and reflect on the process of writing. \n\n\n\nWe hope the writers’ retreats will be a source of collegial support as you work alongside fellow PGRs who share similar goals—but also pressures and insecurities—in relation to academic writing. \n\n\n\nLunch and refreshments will be provided. Please notify us of any dietary requirements no later than 2 weeks before the date of the retreat you are attending. \n\n\n\nPlaces are limited so please email Fran Brooks if you wish to book a spot.

SUMMARY:Seminar 6.8: Manchester’s queer sonics
DESCRIPTION:When and where: Thursday 28th August 2025 from 1-2 pm in Grosvenor East room 206 and on Teams\, with optional extension until 2.30pm for in-person attendees. Tea\, coffee\, juice and snacks provided. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Markus Hetheier. Markus is a 5th year part-time practice-based PhD candidate at the School of Digital Arts (SODA). His artistic research project involves queer sonic mappings of Manchester (co-)produced by ten research participants and him. The project focuses on queer sonics as a transformative tool for community building. \n\n\n\nFormat/topic: Markus will begin the session by a brief introduction of his PhD project\, focusing on the intersection of methodological and theoretical concepts with practice as research as overall approach. He will then present and discuss the research participants’ individual queer sonic mappings of Manchester and the themes which have emerged from the practice. The session will be concluded with an open discussion and Q&A. \n\n\n\nPreparation: If you want to familiarise yourself with queer sonics\, you are welcome to read Truman\, S. E. and Shannon\, D. B. (2018) ‘Queer sonic cultures: an affective walking-composing project’\, Capacious: journal for emerging affect inquiry\, 3(1)\, pp. 58—77. \n\n\n\nFor the discussion and Q&A you may want to think about the following questions: How do we define co-production in artistic research projects? Which role does the researcher have when they are also an artist\, facilitator and curator in the project? What influence \n\n\n\nEmail Loretta to say whether you would like to attend online or in person\, and if you have any dietary requirements (all snacks are vegetarian).
