SUMMARY:Careers in Publishing: Production & Design
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever considered a career in publishing? Do you want to find out more about what working in the industry could look like\, with a focus on roles within production and design? \n\n\n\nProduction and design are all about turning a manuscript on an author’s computer into a real book: a physical and digital product ready and waiting to be found by readers.  \n\n\n\nDesigners define how a book will look\, from the first impressions of a book cover to page breaks and illustrations. The production workflow spans copy-editing\, typesetting\, proofreading\, indexing\, printing and ebook creation\, all the stages required to bring a book to its readers. \n\n\n\nIn this session you’ll get the chance to hear from production and design professionals\, to understand what these roles entail. They’ll discuss their key responsibilities\, the skills they think are invaluable to their roles and what they look for in a CV and covering letter from prospective candidates. They will share insight in their own career journeys and how they got to where they are today\, and offer advice on how you could build a similar career. \n\n\n\nAttendees can expect: candid advice from publishing professionals; the chance to put questions to the panel; and takeaway materials which\, we hope\, will serve as an inspirational and practical resource when it comes to considering a career in one of the most varied and creative industries within the Arts\, whatever your skill-set. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to book a ticket to this online event please click here.

SUMMARY:Writers’ Retreat with Chad McDonald
DESCRIPTION:In-person only in GE 2.06. \n\n\n\nWriters’ Retreats give PhD students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities the opportunity to devote a whole day to writing in a quiet\, structured\, and supportive atmosphere. The retreats are facilitated by Dr Chad McDonald\, the faculty’s Senior Academic and Study Skills Tutor. You will need to arrive ‘ready to write’ but may\, of course\, bring any materials (laptops\, books\, data\, etc.) with you for the whole-day session. There will be some short discussion around good writing practice and how to approach your writing as a professional task\, but much of the day will be devoted to writing without distraction. Whatever your writing project (e.g.\, annual report\, paper\, thesis)\, the retreat will provide a space away from your office or home in which to concentrate and reflect on the process of writing. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
